Which are the Tough Ones?

Which jobs are currently the hardest to fill in the US? Listed in order from most difficult (according to a recent study) are: Engineers, Technicians, Sales Reps, Accounting Staff, and IT Staff. So, what are companies to do? It is imperative that employers find a way to steady the environment of outgoing “boomers” and the growing younger generations. Find ways of retaining some of the company’s older staff, while determining new and original ideas for sourcing and attracting younger talent. Be prepared for what the next generation is looking for in job flexibility, life/work balance, and more advanced technology. Utilize sources you may not have tried in the past, to find and hire the

right staff.

FMLA

Are any of your employees expecting? Did you know anyone(male or female) who worked a minimum of 1250 hours in the last 12 months, for a company with 50+ employees, is eligible for FMLA? The maximum time off according to federal law is 12 weeks(unpaid), but some states have individual rules, see ncsl.org/programs/employ/

fmlachart.htm for more information. The time can be taken in hour increments, or the entire 12 weeks. With the 30 day recommended notice by the employee, the company can devise a plan to handle the additional workload before the employee leaves. Federal law also states that health benefits must continue throughout the leave. Vacation time and seniority however do not accrue during this time. When the employee is ready to return to work, you may want to have a revised or shortened schedule to reintroduce them to the work environment.

Remember to Reward

Recent surveys have some that about 1/3 of the workforce believes their company falls short on noticing and rewarding good performers. We can say “thanks”! This is acceptable both verbally and in writing. Have staff events to recognize achievements. Give someone extra time off, longer lunch, day off, etc. You can even give the better assignments to the overachievers! Good luck and good retention!!
